"During my vacation in Mexico on the stunning Mayan Riviera, I had the pleasure of staying at the unique and enchanting La Valise hotel. The property is beautifully divided into two areas: one right on the beach with breathtaking ocean views, and the other nestled deep in the lush jungle, offering a serene and immersive nature experience. I chose the Rattan Suite (nr 10), and it couldn't have been a better decision. The design was both elegant and authentic, with natural textures, artisanal touches, and a seamless connection to the surrounding environment. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle and falling asleep to the distant rhythm of the waves was simply magical. Every detail of the stay felt thoughtfully curated, and the atmosphere was peaceful, luxurious, and inspiring. La Valise is truly a hidden gem - the perfect blend of comfort, nature, and style. Dear La Valise Team, Thank you for the lovely and relaxing time at La Valise - even if it was unfortunately short. Everything was perfect. I hope to return one day for a longer stay! Gracias! ."

"We just got back from a 4-night stay at La Valise and it completely lived up to the hype. We stayed in one of the jungle-side suites, which felt incredibly private and peaceful. It’s tucked away enough to feel secluded, but still close to everything. The design is beautiful without feeling overdone — relaxed, refined, and very Tulum in the best way. Breakfast each morning was a highlight. The food was consistently great, and the views overlooking the beach made it even better. It never felt crowded — there was always a table ready and waiting. That was something we appreciated throughout the stay: whether it was by the pool or on the beachfront, there was always a sunbed available. It’s one of those rare properties where it feels like they intentionally designed the space to have more room than guests. You could always find a comfortable, quiet place to hang out without competing for space. The service across the board was fantastic — warm, attentive, and genuinely accommodating. They were especially thoughtful and flexible throughout our stay, which made everything feel easy. The location is also ideal. Within about a 15-minute walk, you’re surrounded by tons of great restaurants, day clubs, and nightlife. We opted to walk most nights just to take in the views and the energy of the hotel zone, which ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip. We used the complimentary bikes one afternoon, which was a fun way to cruise around. The cocktails at the bar were excellent — easily some of the best we had all trip. We booked two massages at their spa and both were outstanding. We also had a fantastic dinner at NU — truly memorable. The concierge team handled our airport transfers seamlessly and arranged a private cenote tour for us, which ended up being a highlight. La Valise has that rare balance of feeling intimate but not cramped, luxurious but not pretentious. We left relaxed and already talking about coming back."

"A Magical Stay at La Valise Tulum 🌿🌊 Our stay at La Valise Tulum was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm hospitality, impeccable service, and a peaceful atmosphere that made us feel instantly at home. The property is absolutely stunning — tucked between the jungle and the sea, with the perfect balance of luxury and nature. Every space was beautifully designed, and waking up to the sound of the waves each morning was unreal. One of the highlights of our trip was the private mezcal tasting the La Valise team arranged for us. It was such an intimate and special experience — complete with incredible pairings, thoughtful explanations, and the most delicious mezcals and tequilas we’ve ever had. You could truly feel how much care and curation went into every detail. It’s those kinds of moments that make La Valise so unforgettable. The staff went above and beyond in every way, making sure we were taken care of, comfortable, and enjoying every moment. Whether it was arranging beachside moments, thoughtful turn-down touches, or helping us discover hidden gems in Tulum — everything felt seamless and elevated. If you’re looking for a stay that feels personal, luxurious, and deeply restorative, La Valise is the place. Already dreaming of going back."

"La Valise Tulum is truly a one-of-a-kind experience, and we’re so glad we chose it for our getaway. From the moment we arrived, the peaceful vibe of the hotel made us feel like we’d stepped into a little jungle sanctuary. 🌿✨ We stayed in the Roll Out to the Stars suite, and it was absolutely unforgettable. The bed rolls out onto the terrace, so we got to fall asleep under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. It was such a unique experience and something we’ll be talking about for years to come. 🌌 The room’s design was simple yet beautiful, with natural finishes and thoughtful details that made it feel warm and welcoming. The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our stay, and we loved the balance of privacy and connection to nature. That said, the jungle does come with its quirks—on our last day, I got a tiny sting from a little scorpion. It wasn’t serious, but it’s a good reminder that nature is all around you here! If you’re looking for a place that combines relaxation, adventure, and something completely different, La Valise Tulum is a perfect choice. It’s not your typical hotel experience, and that’s exactly what makes it so special!"

"Booked the suite with rolling bed. Issues: stained robes, slow replacement, A/C not working initially, communication issues with staff, and missing welcome wine promised via Expedia booking. Loved the ambiance, left disappointed due to missed expectations given reputation and rate. We were very much looking forward to our stay at your beautiful property, and while we truly appreciated the unique design and overall atmosphere, I wanted to share a few disappointments that impacted our experience. We had booked the suite with the rolling bed, and checked in around 4:00-4:30 PM, hoping to unwind and take a few photos before our 7:30 PM dinner reservation. Unfortunately, several issues took up most of that limited window: When I reached for the robes, both had noticeable yellow stains. I texted the staff for replacements, and also reported that the A/C remote wasn't working-important since the doors cannot be opened with the A/C on. It took nearly an hour to receive the new robes and for someone to look into the A/C issue. While I understand things can take time, the service felt very slow, especially during a time-sensitive part of our stay. ... our booking on Expedia mentioned a complimentary bottle of wine in the suite, which we never received-something I had been looking forward to after the delays ... I left feeling disappointed that we weren't able to take the photos I envisioned, especially given the reputation and rate of the property. The design is stunning without trying too hard, the service is warm, intuitive, and genuinely thoughtful, and the setting feels like you stumbled into a very chic dream you do not want to wake up from. "Overall, a huge disappointment!! Especially when I consider that I, as a solo traveler, paid USD 900 for one night. In addition, there were the expenses and the transfer from Cancun Airport to Tulum. The following notes: The price paid is absolutely not in proportion to what I experienced and received. Hotel: very beautiful architecture, nice style Staff: Basically, everyone was very friendly and accommodating. In particular, I would like to mention Carlos on the beach, Natyeri at the reception, and the older masseuse who gave a powerful, sensational massage. Room: My reserved room was very large for me alone and beautiful. The only thing was that everyday items, such as hygiene products like cotton pads, ear cleaners, bath slippers, etc., had to be specifically requested in order for them to be brought to the room. Also, my sun loungers on the balcony were not always covered by the cleaning service, and I had to request those as well. My travel adapter for electronic devices did not work in the room. Natyeri at the reception kindly got me one. After the third night. I had to change rooms after the second night. I always felt like someone was in the room starting from the second night. On the third night, I discovered a large badger in my room that had crawled through the straw roof. I could not spend another night there and wanted to switch. Even though it was mentioned at check-in that the concierge is available 24/7, that was not the case. On the first morning, the reception was still not staffed at 7:30 AM. After the roof discovery in my room at night, I only received a response in the morning... Breakfast: That was the first major disappointment for me. On the first day, when I went for breakfast, there was nothing at all. I asked if I was too late. They denied that and told me that breakfast was à la carte. The staff explained the menu to me as follows. 'From the first category, you can choose anything, from the second, one item, and if you want more, you have to pay for it. That is unacceptable!' I pay so much for the room/breakfast and then there are even restrictions! No way. There was only American coffee, which is undrinkable. If I wanted to order an espresso, I had to pay extra for it. The menu said 'Homemade bread.' I asked what types of bread were available. The response was croissants and banana bread! I do not eat croissants, and banana bread is not real bread to me. An absolute no-go for a luxury boutique hotel in this price range. Once, I ordered overnight oatmeal, which is oatmeal soaked overnight. I was simply served raw oats in milk. That went straight back! In the last few days, I was told that I needed to pre-order breakfast. I do not know in advance what I will feel like the next day. On the last day, I had breakfast in my room and ordered banana bread. In the banana bread, I found two small, black, hard, stone-like things and almost broke a tooth! :-(( Because of these experiences, I never made a reservation at their so-called acclaimed star restaurant. If such simple things do not work, then dinner will not work either! Beach: The beach was actually very nice, if it weren't for all the seaweed. At some point, I complained because I smelled the slowly decaying seaweed with every breeze, and the beach was full of it. On the third day, finally a few workers came with wheelbarrows and pitchforks and removed part of it. Of course, it was never enough, because such a hotel should clean it mechanically every morning. So I had to walk over a pile of algae that had washed up on the shore in order to get into the sea. Bar: At the bar, there was a young, small, rather chubby employee with glasses who had absolutely no idea about drinks. I ordered a gin and tonic at the bar. She wanted to serve it in a small white wine glass and top it off with mineral water. So she had no idea at all. I had to explain to her how to properly prepare a simple gin and tonic and which glasses to use for it. It would definitely be beneficial for her to take a bartending course. One morning at breakfast, I observed her a bit. She was just cutting the fruits for the drinks. No gloves on, still wearing all her jewelry on her fingers, and in between, she kept enjoying and then continued working. I almost lost my breakfast!!! When I ordered drinks at the beach, I couldn't order any nuts or chips to go with them; they simply didn't have any. One day, I ordered guacamole with the drinks. Actually a typical Mexican specialty. What a misstep. The guacamole was simply a mashed avocado with a lot of lemon juice. No spices at all; the tortilla chips were completely unseasoned. Italian restaurant in the partner hotel next door. I ordered spaghetti with clams. The shells were almost all empty, and there was so much flat-leaf parsley in it that it overshadowed the entire natural flavor. With the bread, finally some normal bread, there was olive oil, but it was accompanied by vinegar. No Italian would do such a thing. I summoned the restaurant manager and explained to him how simple it is to cook Italian food. I also explained to him how to properly prepare spaghetti with mussels. Unfortunately, they have no idea about Italian cuisine. A customer who runs a travel agency thought she was not hearing correctly when I told her all of this! For me, as a frequent traveler, it was a huge disappointment, and I will not return to either Mexico or this hotel."

8 Unforgettable Experiences at Tulum's La Valise That Redefine Design and Culture Connection in 2025

In 2025, Tulum's La Valise promises a retreat where design, culture, and personal connection intertwine to craft unforgettable memories.

1.

Coffee Ritual Morning Solitude

My mornings start with the aroma of Chiapas coffee curling through the air. The space around me is a masterpiece, where every shadow falls just perfectly. As I pause to savor the view from my quiet spot, inspiration gently wakes. The natural light dances across clay tiles, and I feel intimately connected to both the past and present of Tulum.
2.

Artisan Workshop Discovery

I stepped into a world where clay molds under expert hands tell ancient stories. The workshop is not just about learning a craft—it's an invitation into the soul of Tulum. Each piece created is a conversation with the past and a step towards a design-infused future. Here, culture and creativity intertwine, inspiring me with every textural detail.
3.

Cenote Meditations

Descending into the cenote, the world quiets. Cradled by nature's embrace, the water is a mirrored stillness, reflecting some inner calm back at me. It's in this tranquility that I find renewed clarity and inspiration, a silent moment where the ancient Mayan spirits whisper tales to those who listen.
4.

Evening Tasting Menu

As twilight descends, I find myself at a table where flavors speak of tradition and innovation in equal measure. Each dish is a crafted narrative, a sensory feast on painted ceramics that confronts my appetite and my aesthetic sensibilities. Here, dining is an act of discovery—a seamless blend of taste and sight.
5.

Candlelit Mezcal Night

The flicker of candlelight reflects the deep hues of the mezcal. Each sip unveils stories crafted with smoke and time. As the night deepens, the conversation flows—a shared tapestry of lore and laughter, woven together as harmoniously as the flavors in our glasses.
6.

Design Discussion Inspiration

Gathered around a softly crackling fire, the dialogue flows as freely as the passions it ignites. The night is alive with the spirit of creation, as ideas are exchanged like currency. For me, each conversation is a spark, a flicker that illuminates new paths in the architecture of my thoughts.
7.

Intimate Spa Moment

In a spa where each line and texture aligns to soothe, wellness becomes a narrative. Here, restoration is an art form, and each massage, a stroke on the canvas of my well-being. The scents of local herbs fill the air, enveloping me in a tranquil embrace that tells a story of renewal and harmony.
8.

Architectural Daydreams

Wandering through La Valise, every corner invites a pause. The architecture whispers secrets of creativity and possibility, each line and curve a testament to the dialogue between nature and design. It's not just a space I inhabit but a landscape that inhabits me, influencing the dreams I dare to dream.
Baron's Tip
"Notice how the afternoon shadows soften the lines of a lime-washed wall; it’s a design language that whispers stories, offering a space where ideas quietly ignite."

What La Valise Tulum is Actually Like for Design Culture Connection Escape

Arriving at La Valise Tulum, I first felt the smooth breeze weave through the open spaces like an artist’s brush, filling the air with a serene energy. It became immediately clear that every inch whispered stories through its design—discreet but profoundly expressive. This was more than just a refined stay; it was a crafted journey, unfolding with each step.
My partner and I wandered into the vibrant heartbeat of Tulum, where every ruin and gallery seemed to converse with us in a language of history and craft. The textures of the town, from coarse stone to delicate textiles, promised experiences that sparked both reflection and imagination. It was an invigorating dance between the ancient and the innovative.
As the evenings settled with the comforting hum of the ocean, we found ourselves back at the hotel, savoring mezcal and quiet conversation. These were the moments I cherished—where creativity met connection, and design wasn’t just seen but felt. This trip wasn’t just about observing; it was about discovering a deeper narrative of place and presence that we'd carry home.

My Journey

A Design and Culture Immersion in Tulum

Day 1

Arrival and Setting the Scene

I arrived in Tulum more laden with anticipation than luggage. The sun was softening as we stepped into La Valise, where the design immediately whispered calm and curiosity. It wasn't mere aesthetics, each corner hinted at stories, waiting to be written in the language of light and shadow. The evening set in with a gentle tension, a reminder of my search for something beyond routine beauty. I held my partner's hand, both of us eager yet slightly hesitant, wondering if Tulum's promises of inspiration and connection would unfold as hoped.
Day 2

Exploring Texture and Taste

The morning light played against the room's woven details as I sipped my coffee. We ventured into town, letting intuition guide us through boutiques where textiles begged to be touched and ceramics whispered their earthbound origins. By midday, we were taste-testing Tulum, each bite in the café an exploration of flavors that honoured the past while nodding toward modern creativity. The day dissolved my earlier tension, revealing the essence of our journey: to see, taste, feel, and reimagine every detail.
Day 3

Cenote Reflections and Personal Revelations

Suspended in the cool embrace of a cenote, I let go of the residual noise I carried from home. The water mirrored thoughts long submerged, of routines, expectations, and what it meant to truly disconnect yet feel profoundly connected. Floating there with my partner, I understood that fear of missing out could transform into a gratitude for the present. Each droplet felt like a new idea, a fresh perspective dissolving into my skin.
Day 4

Artisan Encounters and Design Dialogues

In local ateliers, we found artisans whose hands told stories of heritage through their crafts. Conversations flowed like mezcal, nuanced and rich, and I saw my own designs reflected in their hands, simplicity woven with complexity. This was the dialogue I yearned for, one that speaks without words but through the very materials and techniques. By dusk, I felt an unfamiliar sense of renewal, bridging the past with what could be a more thoughtful tomorrow.
Day 5

Intimacy Under the Stars

Beneath a canopy of stars, our dinner was a sensory affair, ocean murmurs, candlelight slicked across plates, aromas that lingered longer than shadows. This wasn't just dining, it was a continuum of experiences; each taste, a note in a symphony of place and time. I realized our connection wasn't just romantic, it was creatively entwined, spinning narratives shared over the gentle clinks of glasses. The evening whispered promises sealed by the rhythm of waves.
Day 6

Mayan Echoes and Modern Reverberations

Our journey to the ruins brought us closer to the ancient veins of this land. Standing where countless before us pondered existence, I felt the echoes of their whispers mixing with the rustle of the jungle, blending history with our story. By evening, Tulum's vibrant blend of old and new resonated in my mind, reinforcing my belief in the marriage of tradition and modern creativity. Fear had subsided, replaced by a growing symphony of gratitude for each layered experience.
Day 7

Farewell with Threads of Continuation

Packing felt less like leaving and more like gathering pieces of this journey to take home. Tulum had given me designs not just in art, but in living, to carry home and draw upon. I found the inspiration I sought, not in grand gestures, but in small, intentional details, a lasting narrative composed by textures, tastes, and shared moments that would continue to unfurl back in the rhythms of daily life. As the waves promised return journeys, I felt transformed, recharged and creatively sparked, ready to weave this newfound sense of connection through every future endeavor.
